Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer is a YA magical realism novel that follows Jam Gallahue, a teenage girl whose life was so perfect until her boyfriend died a few months ago and left her unsure of what to do anymore. This wasn't difficult to read or anything; I moved through it pretty quickly. This story is a whirlwind of good literature, dazzling mystery and the question of what it means to be young and in love. In most cases, the reviews are necessarily limited to those that were available to us ahead of publication. Belzhar is a very difficult book for me to review. We have only a few scant memories of the time they spent before Reeve’s death (it was only a few weeks). On the other hand, I felt like it kind of cheapened the story in a way. But it is NOT appropriate to pretend your boyfriend (WHO WAS NEVER YOUR BOYFRIEND, YOU MADE THAT UP TOO) died so that you can be in this group of friends who've all experienced LEGITIMATE trials in their lives. i'm conflicted about a number of its different elements, annoyed/perplexed by others, but also pretty impressed by the big reveal's ability to genuinely surprise me.
